Overview
When IO Interactive’s 007 First Light releases on March 18, 2027 for Nintendo Switch 2, it will join the versions already available on PC and consoles. Those launched on PS5, PC and Xbox Series X/S on May 27, 2026, with a launch trailer revealing the MI6 setting where Bond begins his training.
The story follows James Bond as he becomes an agent in MI6, rather than starting out as the experienced spy from every film. Patrick Gibson portrays a young Bond (26 years old) who was a Royal Navy air crewman. His actions during a mission in Iceland draw attention from M, the head of MI6, and John Greenway, a former 00 agent turned instructor. The rogue return of operative 009 becomes early test material for Bond’s new program. The game does not adapt any specific movie or book.
Bond’s spycraft
The Creative Approach lets Bond use stealth, action or both in missions without forcing an open-world sandbox style. Bond’s spycraft skills include reading surroundings to spot opportunities or bluffing his way past guards without violence. This social stealth allows access to areas otherwise off-limits.
When used during missions, Bond’s Instinct creates opportunities for him to lure enemies or bluff his way past suspicion. It also sharpens focus for precision combat.
Q Branch gadgets
The Q-Lens highlights useful information like hidden devices or hackable targets. The Q-Watch activates gadgets to solve problems rather than providing instant-win upgrades.
Gadgets include a Smoke Pod, Flash Mine and Laser Strap that help Bond approach challenges with force or stealth. The Smoke Pod blocks visibility at short range. These tools support different approaches; they require careful use in each mission. The Dart Phone quietly moves enemies out of the way while the Flash Mine stuns them briefly.
Locations and Tactical Simulation
The main campaign takes place in locations such as Iceland, London MI6 headquarters, Malta’s training facility, a hotel chess championship in Slovakia, an Aleph black market in Mauritania, and a Kensington gala. The TacSim replay mode is available at the MI6 facility, with its first two missions accessible initially and more levels after finishing the game. Scored challenges use modifiers and progression unlocks, giving players a reason to try different approaches on a return visit.
Can you play offline?
007 First Light does not include multiplayer; IO Interactive says it requires only one-time internet access for the Day 1 patch, but the full main campaign can be played without connection afterward. Switch 2 will release on March 18, 2027, following PC and consoles on May 27, 2026.
