Call of Duty's Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) offers Trait options to shape your playstyle. While the game doesn't provide clear rankings, our recommendation is to complete Warfighter first and Scout second, aiming for Possum as early as possible, especially when playing solo.
How Possum, Tourniquet & Medkits Work Together

Possum is the best trait in DMZ for solo players. It brings your Operator back from death into Last Stand.
However, Possum doesn't work alone: there are two other recovery options you can use, an available Tourniquet or Self-Revive Kit.
Here’s how it all works:
- Possum: Revives your Operator from death into Last Stand, once per match.
- Tourniquet: Restores a downed Operator back up after using Possum, if the ability is available, but leaves them at 100 maximum health instead of the usual 150. This means you’ll need to use a Medkit to repair the wound.
- Medkit: Repairs the wound, restoring maximum health and making Tourniquet available again.
If another squad kills you, wait until they’ve finished looting and moved away before activating Possum. JGOD’s video shows this working, though enemies can return and kill you again. Possum is one extra recovery from death per match, not unlimited lives.
Warfighter: What Should I Pick Before Possum?

The Warfighter tree is a good choice for those who want to focus on combat.
- Equipment Professional: Slowly recharges equipped Lethals and Tacticals (gadgets like flashbangs or smoke bombs). This is great if you’re using equipment frequently.
- Combat Resistance: Reduces the damage taken from explosives and reduces hostile tactical effects on your Operator. If enemies are dropping lots of grenades in a match or setting off explosive traps regularly, this is worth considering.
- Quick Fix: Cuts health regen delay after kills, ensuring you can stay in combat longer.
- Viper Sense: Conceals you from thermal optics and AI targeting systems.
- Possum: Revives you back into Last Stand once per game after dying.
At three Warfighter points spent, pick Equipment Professional or Combat Resistance; at six, Quick Fix or Viper Sense; at nine, Possum. Your first point unlocks a random Minor Trait. Being at the top of the menu does not make Possum an immediate first-point unlock.
Equipment Professional is our general pick for frequent equipment use. Take Combat Resistance if explosives are your bigger problem. For stealth, choose Viper Sense; for repeated fights against Operators and AI, choose Quick Fix.
Scout: Overwatch or Thermal Padding?
If you want more looting options while avoiding squads in DMZ, Scout is a great second tree for solo players.
- Hostile Looter: Gives hostiles a chance to drop an Uncommon Printer Ingredient (used to craft items) when they die, with a very small chance of a Rare ingredient. Container Looter instead gives containers a chance of an extra piece of loot. These are the three-point alternatives.
- UAV Upgrade: Increases UAV range and duration, turning them into Advanced UAVs that can see further than regular ones. This is our six-point pick for reconnaissance. The alternative, Field Crafting, lets you craft from Common Printer resources while deployed.
- Thermal Padding: Hides your Operator from UAVs and downgrades Advanced UAVs to UAV detection. Choose it at nine points for a stealth-focused build. Advanced UAVs can still detect you.
- Overwatch: UAV Towers you activate never expire. Choose this instead of Thermal Padding if you want lasting surveillance around an activated tower. It does not turn a tower into whole-map coverage.
Our solo recommendation is Hostile Looter, UAV Upgrade and Thermal Padding. If your runs revolve around holding an area and watching its approaches, swap the last pick for Overwatch. You cannot select both final Scout choices on the same ordinary tree.
For this build, leave the blue Survivalist tree unspent and finish Warfighter and Scout. Survivalist’s recovery options suit other builds, but spending points there delays these two final choices.
How Do I Earn Trait Points?
Since each Operator earns up to 18 Trait Points through their Dog Tag progression by extracting successfully (not tied to DMZ Player Level), you can complete two nine-point trees. Our recommendation prioritizes Warfighter → Possum first for solo survival, then Scout for looting and UAV information.
Minor Traits are randomized. Pick from what your Operator actually reveals rather than following someone else’s Minor choices exactly.
Use the Trait Tree Planner
Use MW4 DMZ Trait Tree Planner to preview and adjust your build. Reset changes only the preview. Remember, once you lock in Major Traits like Possum or Overwatch in game, they cannot be changed until Operator Prestige resets ordinary Trait progress.
