Overview
Larian Studios’ Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game Baldur’s Gate 3 puts you in charge of building a party of companions. You can play solo or with up to three friends on other platforms, but even as a single player your party will face difficult choices that affect the world around them.
Your companions will face a choice between resisting a Mind Flayer parasite or embracing its influence during your adventure through Larian Studios’ take on the Forgotten Realms setting of Dungeons & Dragons. Some people may choose to resist even if they are infected by the Mind Flayer, but others can embrace it and gain new abilities that change how their character looks.
Your party
Your companions’ decisions also shape your relationship with them. In some cases you might need to choose between different ways of interacting with a companion or decide whether they have earned the right to stay by your side. The game lets players make these kinds of tough choices without forcing everyone into one path.
Origin and custom characters
The party can also grow as you explore Larian’s take on Dungeons & Dragons. You will encounter companions who have their own stories and goals that might be different from your character, but they always join the adventure with a specific background. Some of them are named Origin characters. Players can also create a custom character from 11 races and 12 classes.
Larian Studios has added 12 new subclasses for Baldur’s Gate 3 in Patch 8
Patch 8 added one subclass for each existing class, including Hexblade Warlock, Bladesinging Wizard and Swashbuckler Rogue.
Baldur’s Gate 3 features turn-based combat based on D&D rules and allows for environmental interactions
The party will face a variety of challenges during your adventure through Baldur’s Gate 3. Larian has designed the game to let players interact with their environment in different ways. You can use sneaking, shoving or climbing as part of exploration rather than waiting between combat encounters.
The game also features turn-based combat based on D&D rules and allows for environmental interactions that shape encounters. Initiative determines turn order, while advantage and disadvantage affect dice rolls.
Playing with friends
The game also lets you play solo with a full team that includes companions. Larian introduced Photo Mode and cross-platform multiplayer for PC, Mac, PS5 and Xbox in Patch 8. The company has called this its final major update.
