Overview
FromSoftware’s Elden Ring has become one of the most beloved action RPGs ever made since its 2022 release. Set across the vast and dangerous Lands Between, players take on the role of a Tarnished, someone who returns to this world after the Elden Ring was shattered and demigods claimed Great Runes.
What do you actually do in Elden Ring?
Elden Ring is an action RPG where exploration lies at its heart. You play as a Tarnished seeking to become Elden Lord, navigating vast open landscapes filled with swamps, mountains and castles. The game encourages experimentation through combat styles: wield swords to slash enemies down or use magic for stealthy attacks.
The Lands Between
Traveling on foot or horseback lets you take in the world’s rich environments at your own pace. Sites of Grace act as fast-travel points, while a spectral steed aids exploration and mounted movement. The map records terrain features like mountains and buildings to help navigation, though some areas remain off-limits until later.
Character builds
Character creation is key: choose between different starting classes, then experiment with weapons, magic spells and defensive skills. Stealthy approaches offer an alternative to direct combat; the choice depends on your playstyle rather than a single “best build.” Different weapons offer their own skills.
What happens when you die?
Elden Ring treats death not as defeat but part of progression: Runes earned from enemies and items can be spent for leveling up or purchasing items. Death drops your carried Runes, which you can recover; dying again before recovery loses that dropped set, without erasing spent levels. Resting at a Site of Grace restores HP and FP while refilling flasks, though most defeated enemies respawn. A nearby Stake of Marika can offer another respawn point.
Spirit Ashes and co-op
While the base game supports online multiplayer with allies, additional assistance comes in the form of Spirit Ashes: summoned spirits that can aid you near rebirth monuments (though not all locations allow this, and they cannot be used during multiplayer). Shadow of the Erdtree is a paid expansion requiring the base game and adding new areas and enemies; it’s distinct from Nightreign, which requires separate purchase.
Elden Ring remains a landmark in action RPG design. Its vast world rewards exploration, while its combat systems encourage experimentation with different play styles. The game offers an open-ended experience that keeps players engaged for countless hours, and many deaths later.
